01 / Reading the material

The bay and the boundary

The remains of Al Qal’a of Beni Hammad suggest two scales of order. A repeated interior bay makes a space legible by recurrence; a fortified boundary gathers many different spaces into one figure. Neither needs an elaborate surface pattern to establish a strong rhythm.

02 / From surface to space

Read the whole.
Then the edge.

Compare the regular field of the mosque plan with the less predictable ground beyond it. This is a useful way to study where an organizing grid can remain strict and where it needs to bend. The join between systems is often more informative than either system by itself.

Compare the regularity of a prayer-hall plan with the irregular terrain around the city. Where does construction follow a system, and where does it adapt?

04 / At the bench

Make the observation tangible.

Draw a regular series of openings inside an irregular perimeter. Keep their widths constant, then vary only the depth of their reveals. Watch how the resulting shadows distinguish repetition from monotony.

A useful record

Keep a view of the whole beside a close detail. Note the material, lighting and the one variable you changed.
