Develop a system from this study
Image note
Three original interpretations of lakeshore settlements & layered heritage, informed by Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid region. These images explore material and spatial ideas; they are not documentary views or measured reconstructions of the reference. The palette is drawn from the material portrait.

Image credits and reuseThe colour strip is the entry’s study palette. Artwork sources and image credits and reuse terms are recorded in the archive.
Artwork recordThree views of one material idea.
The Ohrid region joins a long-lived lake ecosystem with historic settlements and religious buildings. Its natural and cultural heritage extends across the present border with Albania.
Read the material study01 / Reading the material
A dense edge beside open water
Ohrid’s lakeside settlements and religious buildings are read against an unusually expansive neighbouring surface: the lake. The contrast between a built edge and open water changes the scale of a monument. A facade alone cannot describe that setting.

02 / From surface to space
Read the whole.
Then the edge.
Follow the shoreline as a route. The density of buildings, a pause in the edge and a view across the water establish a sequence of enclosure and release. The region’s natural and cultural connections extend across the border with Albania.
Compare the dense edge of a lakeside settlement with the open water beyond it. Read a monument through its shoreline setting as well as its facade.
03 / Colour in context
A palette you can work with.
Five tones drawn from the material portrait. Select a colour, compare it on paper and ink, or copy its value into your own study.

Try the bench exercise
04 / At the bench
Make the observation tangible.
Compose a compact textured edge beside a broad, quieter plane. Introduce one deliberate opening toward the water. Use the result to study urban-landscape relationships without claiming to map the lake’s ecology.
Keep a view of the whole beside a close detail. Note the material, lighting and the one variable you changed.
