Fortified courtyards & shared conservation
Develop a system from this study
Image note
Three original interpretations of fortified courtyards & shared conservation, informed by Reopening of the Othello Tower/Citadel in Famagusta. These images explore material and spatial ideas; they are not documentary views or measured reconstructions of the reference. The palette is drawn from the material portrait.

Care made visible at the joint
Othello Tower’s conservation provides a way to study the meeting of historic fabric and later intervention. A repaired edge, a renewed route and an existing masonry surface need not be visually identical to work together. The joint can make the act of care legible.

02 / From surface to space
Read the whole.
Then the edge.
Compare the defensive exterior with the courtyard inside. The enclosure reads as a substantial mass from outside and as a boundary to shared space from within. Conservation adds another layer: how people can encounter and use that space again.
Compare the outer defensive wall with the courtyard it encloses. Look for the junction between conserved fabric and the interventions that allow it to be used again.
03 / Colour in context
A palette you can work with.
Five tones drawn from the material portrait. Select a colour, compare it on paper and ink, or copy its value into your own study.

04 / At the bench
Make the observation tangible.
Design an abstract masonry fragment with a clearly distinguishable, restrained new support or walkway. Show old and new without exaggerating the contrast. Keep the bicommunal conservation context present in discussion of the reference.
Keep a view of the whole beside a close detail. Note the material, lighting and the one variable you changed.
