Develop a system from this study
Image note
Three original interpretations of engraved boulders & inhabited shelters, informed by Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape. These images explore material and spatial ideas; they are not documentary views or measured reconstructions of the reference. The palette is drawn from the material portrait.

Artwork recordThree views of one material idea.
Gobustan contains rock engravings alongside evidence of caves, settlements and burials. Its surfaces record repeated human presence in a rocky landscape over long periods.
Read the material study01 / Reading the material
A mark still belongs to its stone
Gobustan’s engraved surfaces are part of a landscape of shelters and repeated occupation. An incision, a natural crack and a weathered edge can all catch light, but they are not interchangeable evidence. The larger boulder helps a viewer distinguish an intentional mark from the texture around it.

02 / From surface to space
Read the whole.
Then the edge.
A close crop makes the line legible; a wider view restores its position and scale. Pair the two in a study instead of asking one image to do both jobs. The movement between intimate surface detail and the shelter beyond it gives the record its spatial depth.
Compare the scale of a single engraving with the boulder and shelter around it. Keep the mark’s location as part of the record.
03 / Colour in context
A palette you can work with.
Five tones drawn from the material portrait. Select a colour, compare it on paper and ink, or copy its value into your own study.

Try the bench exercise
04 / At the bench
Make the observation tangible.
Explore shallow incisions in a fresh, abstract clay sample under side light. Vary depth and direction without reproducing historical figures. Record the whole sample alongside the detail so that scale remains clear.
Keep a view of the whole beside a close detail. Note the material, lighting and the one variable you changed.
