Patio houses & caravan-town streets
Develop a system from this study
Image note
Three original interpretations of patio houses & caravan-town streets, informed by Ancient Ksour of Ouadane, Chinguetti, Tichitt and Oualata. These images explore material and spatial ideas; they are not documentary views or measured reconstructions of the reference. The palette is drawn from the material portrait.

Light inside a compact fabric
Mauritania’s ksour suggest a compact arrangement in which narrow passages and interior patios do different spatial work. A continuous outer wall can hold the street while an opening within a house brings another kind of light. Density does not require every space to be enclosed in the same way.

02 / From surface to space
Read the whole.
Then the edge.
Trace the route from a narrow public passage into a wider internal void. The transition changes pace, orientation and the amount of sky visible. A section makes this contrast clearer than a facade alone.
Compare the narrow public passage with the open private patio. How can tightly packed buildings make room for light within?
03 / Colour in context
A palette you can work with.
Five tones drawn from the material portrait. Select a colour, compare it on paper and ink, or copy its value into your own study.

04 / At the bench
Make the observation tangible.
Build a dense block with a small number of deliberately shaped inner courts. Keep the public passages narrow and legible. Explore how openings distribute light without presenting the model as a universal formula for desert settlements.
Keep a view of the whole beside a close detail. Note the material, lighting and the one variable you changed.
