Painted shelters & granite outcrops
Develop a system from this study
Image note
Three original interpretations of painted shelters & granite outcrops, informed by Laas Geel, Somaliland. These images explore material and spatial ideas; they are not documentary views or measured reconstructions of the reference. The palette is drawn from the material portrait.

Image credits and reuseThe colour strip is the entry’s study palette. Artwork sources and image credits and reuse terms are recorded in the archive.
Artwork recordThree views of one material idea.
Laas Geel’s painted panels occupy shelters in a granite outcrop near seasonal watercourses. The British Museum’s rock-art project documents the site within the wider heritage of Somaliland and the Horn of Africa.

The shelter before the painted panel
Laas Geel’s granite outcrops create protected surfaces within a larger exposed landscape. The distinction between outer rock and sheltered underside matters before the painted panel is isolated for close viewing. The material envelope is part of the archaeological record.

02 / From surface to space
Read the whole.
Then the edge.
Compare the opening of a shelter with the depth behind it. Light and orientation determine what becomes visible and how the panel is encountered. A wide view restores the seasonal watercourses and landscape context that a close crop leaves out.
Compare the protected underside of a shelter with its exposed outer rock. Keep painted figures within their archaeological and cultural setting.
03 / Colour in context
A palette you can work with.
Five tones drawn from the material portrait. Select a colour, compare it on paper and ink, or copy its value into your own study.

04 / At the bench
Make the observation tangible.
Make an abstract shelter model from two uneven masses and study the light beneath their overlap. Use unmarked surfaces. Keep the historic figures and their interpretation with the documented rock-art record.
Keep a view of the whole beside a close detail. Note the material, lighting and the one variable you changed.
